December - Dresden Castle and the surrounding buildings
Dresden Castle or Royal Palace is one of the oldest buildings in Dresden, Germany. For almost 400 years, it was the residence of the electors (1547–1806) and kings (1806–1918) of Saxony of the Albertine line of the House of Wettin. It is known for the different architectural styles employed, from Baroque to Neo-renaissance.
Augustus was born in Dresden on 12 May 1670. As the second son, Augustus had no expectation of inheriting the electorate, since his older brother, Johann Georg IV, assumed the post after the death of their father on 12 September 1691. Augustus was well educated, and spent some years in travel and in fighting against France. On 27 April 1694, his brother Johann Georg died from smallpox leaving Augustus to be the next king. He was known as King Augustus ll the Strong as he liked to prove his strength to his people. As king, Augustus was a patron of the arts and architecture and built incredible structures on his palace grounds.
