In our MindUP curriculum we've been learning about the brain. These photos show the students learning neurons and dentrites. The neuron is the basic working unit of the brain, a specialized cell designed to transmit information to other nerve cells, muscle, or gland cells. Dendrites extend from the neuron cell body and receive messages from other neurons. Synapses are the contact points where one neuron communicates with another. Below: Students are showing how their arms and hands look like neurons and dentrites. For our MindUp program we have been concentrating on breathing slow, thoughtfully to help calm our brain. This helps the amygdala to calm down so the prefrontal cortex is able to learn. Students had to concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply and to try to keep their stuffed animal of their tummies. This is certainly a fun way to calm down. |
